This is me – Stephanie –
taking in the sunshine during a recent trip to Arizona. While I was there I wondered why aren’t we using more of the sun’s energy to power our lives? These days, solar panels are showing up all over the place. With current government tax incentives, they are affordable and make sense! Come with me as I explore the possibilities of solar power as a means to slowing global warming and achieving true energy independence.
As a real estate and environmental lawyer, I deal with governmental regulations often. Sometimes decisions of agencies such as the Department of Energy, the Bureau of Land Management or the Enviromental Protection Agency don’t make sense when it comes to going green. I can help sort the questions out.
You’re at the right place if you want to learn everything under the sun about solar power!
If you want to read even more about solar energy and other renewable options, be sure to check out two more blogs: Solar Panels – Green Power and Peachy Green. I’ll see you there….
I am a building contractor in Laredo, Texas, which is one of the hottest spots in the country. One of my customers, for whom I am building a 40,000 square foot warehouse, has expressed an interest in solar energy.
I have to shamefully admit that I have never really looked into it, and would really appreciate some help. The power needed for the actual warehouse space will be limited to some lighting (it will be outfitted with many skylights). However, the 3,000 square foot office space within the building will run about a dozen computers and about 8 tons of air conditioning.
It would seem to me that because we have 40,000 square feet of roof space to work with, and a relatively small amount of power consumption, that we can use a more inefficient solar panel system. I’m assuming that larger, less efficient, and I’m assuming less expensive solar panels might meet our needs.
The air-conditioned office space averages about 5-10% of the entire footprint of the typical office/warehouse building. Our city has more warehouse space than San Antonio and Austin, Texas, combined, with less than 1/10th of the population. With that much warehouse space, a cost-effective solar power solution could really make a difference.
Thanks,
juan

Hi Stephanie:
you asked yourself “why aren’t we using more of the sun’s energy to power our lives?” only because you were in Arizona, and not in Sweden!
Cheers,
Roberto
I am a Sr. Research analyst for a reinsurance company (Munich Re) in Princeton NJ. I was assigned a paper on Solar panels for residential homes. I am trying to find info/guidelines for older homes …any statements on specific types of roofs – good for solar panels/not good….desperate for info. Please call or email to discuss…609-243-4740.
Hi There,
I’ve recently put up some simple ideas on my blog regarding upping hte efficiency of solar panels – thought you might be interested.
I’ve also started building a solar hothouse for my vegetables – plans at the site too.
Cheers from Australia.
