MGM Tower - Los Angeles

MGM Tower in Los Angeles

Last week, sunny Southern California added another jewel to the crown that is solar power in the area.  Led by Constellation Place, LLC, the MGM Tower unveiled a solar panel installation that will make it one of the greenest retrofitted buildings in the United States, and certainly in Century City!

The solar panels were installed by SPG Solar, Inc. and cover the parking deck at the building on Constellation Boulevard.  As stated by Patrick Meara, Senior VP of JMB Realty (an affiliate of Constellation):

“We are committed to the concept and reality of sustainable building operations.  We believe that investing in the conservation of resources is good for our business, good for our tenants, and good for the communities we serve.”

The famous MGM trademark

More than 1400 solar panels were installed over one acre of space.  The system will generate nearly 571,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year.

What does this mean, you may wonder?  Consider this translation: the savings is equivalent to 31,500 gallons of gas, or 92 acres of trees!

The system was made possible in part by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) solar incentive program, effective October 1, 2007.  MGM is quite proud of its continuing green efforts.  In addition to the tower, the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios in Burbank has taken steps to improve its environmental impact by installing 2 solar arrays on its rooftops.

I would say that all the recent solar installations constitute a blockbuster move on the part of the company.  That is using some serious star power!
