There’s a new push for solar on the White House. More than thirty years after President Carter installed 32 solar panels on the roof of the White House (which were subsequently removed when Reagan was elected in 1980), many are wondering why a progressive, energy-conscious President like Obama has not re-instated solar power at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
At solaronthewhitehouse.com, you can read about the history of solar panels, check out information on what it would cost to install solar panels on the White House (through a solar panel lease), and even sign a petition urging President Obama to accept the offer of Sungevity to donate and install solar panels — at no cost to American taxpayers — at the White House to set an example of clean energy for the American public.
Sungevity has prepared an iQuote for the solar on the White House using its unique software.
According to Sungevity’s figures, the cost to install a 17.85 kW solar panel system on the White House would be about $100,000. But they are offering to donate the panels, bringing the cost to 0. If the Obamas were to lease the system, it would cost about $500 a month. The system – consisting of 102 solar panels – would bring the monthly electricity bills down from nearly $2000 a month to just $377… a monthly savings of over $1600!
Over the course of the 15-year lease term, the environmental savings from installing solar on the White House would be the equivalent of planting more than 2700 trees, or not driving more than 1.5 million miles!
You can help encourage Obama to accept Sungevity’s offer to upgrade the White House with solar panels by signing the petition here.
I just did! Won’t you join me?
