The state of Minnesota will soon see its largest solar power installation at a local university.  The photovoltaic array at the College of St. Benedict (aka St. John’s University) will generate about 20% of the campus energy requirements with an 1,800 solar panel installation.

The college and the Order of St. Benedict will work with Westwood Renewables to put together the project, which is expected to produce 575,000 kWh each year.  This amount of clean, free solar energy would power 65 homes.

The other great aspect of St. John’s University solar array is to quell the fears and concerns of solar energy doubters.  The state of Minnesota sits at the same northern latitude as Germany, which is a leading country with respect to solar energy production.

A key component to the project is to raise public awareness that, even in locations farther north, solar energy is a viable, green alternative.  Minnesota can help demonstrate that PV technology can be successful outside of sunny states like California, Florida and Arizona.

Any solar energy production taking place in your home town?  Please share the details below.
