New development of a utility scale solar project

Today, Duke Energy announced a new agreement with ENN Group (a Chinese energy company and solar panel manufacturer) to develop and operate utility scale solar projects in the U.S.  The partnership will be focused on development of large, utility scale solar farms, as well as smaller commercial rooftop solar panels for properties that will operate as distributed generation projects.

With respect to the new partnership, Duke Energy’s CEO stated:

“China is investing heavily in clean energy and we can make greater progress in the U.S. by joining forces and working together.”

The companies are combining forces to tap into the expanding renewable energy market in the United States.  The demand is increasing due in part to legal requirements in many states that dictate that utilities use clean energy for a portion of the electricity they sell.  Of the 50 states, all but 17 have targets or goals in this regard, notes the U.S. Department of Energy.

Duke Energy, based in Charlotte, N.C. is looking to develop solar farms across the nation.  With its partnership with ENN, they can tap into thin-film solar panel technology.  Together, the companies will make decisions on vendors for solar panels and other components and services project- by-project, he said.

Their respective backgrounds prove that it could be a match in the solar-powered heavens.  Duke Energy already has a 10-MW customer solar installation program.  And, ENN operates natural gas and biofuels businesses, while also manufacturing thin-film solar panels.

Stay tuned for more on this exciting partnership!
