Chicken soup may be good for the soul, but now it can help the environment too!
Campbell Soup Company announced this week that it will run on solar power at its Napoleon, Ohio plant. Campbell’s Soup has entered a power purchase agreement with BNB Napoleon Solar for construction of a nearly 10 megawatt (MW) solar farm on a 24-acre parcel of property.

Campbell Soup Company goes solar
The PV solar panels will generate enough electricity to offset 15% of the plant’s power requirements, which will save more than $4 million over the life of the 20-year agreement. The carbon savings from this reduction of emissions is the equivalent of taking 2,000 vehicles off the road each year. The Campbell Soup Company solar power farm will include about 24,000 solar panels from SunPower, including a tracking system which follows the sun across the sky and increases the panels’ efficiency.
In addition to significant energy and money savings, the solar power project will create about 200 green jobs in Ohio.
According to the company’s press release, Campbell Soup has committed to reducing its overall environmental impact by half, including its water usage and carbon emissions. Its 2010 corporate social responsibility report indicates that Campbells recycled more than 84% of the waste it generated, and also invested over $6 million in sustainability projects.
