Color Me Green

Color me green at Crayola!  The company is best known for creating colorful crayons, delighting kids and parents alike.  Now, it has announced plans to develop a new 15-acre solar farm in Forks Township, Pennsylvania.

Crayola is moving forward with a partnership with UGI Energy and PPL Corporation to develop the solar park, which will be comprised of about 26,000 solar panels on the site owned by the crayonmaker.  The two energy companies will provide the equipment, installation and maintenance.

By early 2010, the Crayola solar park should be operational, generating clean, green solar electricity.  Crayola will purchase 100% of the solar power from the park, which will offset about 10% of its annual energy costs.  Company spokespersons estimate that about 1 billion crayons will be “extra green,” as a result!

The cost of the Crayola solar park will be defrayed in part by a $1.5 million grant, funded by federal stimulus monies from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  Matching funds from private sources will bring in an additional $10.5 million.

In order to showcase this solar achievement, Crayola will install a solar energy display at its Easton “Crayola Factory.”  But even if you can’t make it to Pennsylvania to see the exhibit (or to view the solar park itself), you can still bring home a piece of the action each time you pick up a box of Crayola Crayons.

Next time your child draws a picture, you’ll know that there is a piece of sunshine in those vibrant crayon colors!
