Its Day 1 of the Obama Presidency. Can you believe it? Probably one of the most challenging things facing our new President is trying to keep expectations in check, while accomplishing enough in the near future to not lose an amazing approval rating.
If you didn’t watch or TIVO the huge event yesterday, the entire text of President Obama’s speech can be read here. To save you a bit of time, however, I am pulling out the best parts of the speech, in my humble opinion (IMHO):
“That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.”
I agree. Particularly with respect to the last sentence. I cheered in my living room at the hope of renewable energy projects, like solar and wind, finally coming to fruition in the next 4 years.
But President Obama cannot do this entirely on his own. Nor can he solve the many other issues facing the United States with a simple proclamation of hope and promise. It takes a contingency of people that also believe in his hopes, dreams and promises.
People like you and me.
Instead of asking, “Now What, Mr. President,” we should ask, “What Can We Do to Help You, Mr. President?” Its time for all of us to draw together as a nation and a world to cut back on polluting energy sources like coal and oil. To gain true energy independence for our nation by implementing solar and wind projects. To look back on this day: January 20, 2009, when things started to change for the better, and the grasp of Big Oil finally started to loosen a bit.
I was there. I am there. Are you?
