Google providing solar chargers for developing countries

Internet giant Google announced a significant humanitarian gift last week.  A donation of over $200,000 from Google.org (its philanthropic division) will send 3,000 solar chargers to the International Medical Corps (IMC).  The IMC provides health and relief services to third world countries.  Its one of the primary organizations donating relief efforts to earthquake-stricken Haiti.

The solar chargers will help recharge cell phones and other communications devices in areas where grid-based electricity is a luxury and not an expectation.  Using solar cell chargers improves the effectiveness of volunteer efforts in the regions where communication would otherwise be hampered by lack of electricity.

The Solio solar gadget charger is a convenient easy way to recharge a number of portable electronic devices.  Cell phones, GPS units, cameras, MP3 players and even computers can be powered by the sun through use of the foldable solar panels.

If you can believe it, the Solio charger can power up to 3,000 different electronic devices.  With clean, free solar energy, you don’t need to worry about finding an outlet for “juice.”  Solio solar chargers can hold a charge for up to 1 year and, if necessary, you can plug it into the wall, as well.

Google’s donation to the IMC will have a significant impact.  The remote areas in which volunteers, doctors and trainers may be stationed often lack grid-based electricity and phone lines.  Using solar charged cell phones will greatly improve relief efforts through better and more coordinated communication.

The donation is worth about $216,000 and demonstrates Google’s ongoing commitment to promote solar power and renewable energy worldwide.
