A solar clothes dryer is a simple, energy-efficient device

I was so amazed when I saw a clip on YouTube produced by a group of high school students that were promoting a solar clothes dryer.   Even more amazing is the price for this newfangled device:  a mere $18!

What?  How can that be?  Well, as they explain, the solar clothes dryer uses energy from the sun which has been around…. well for us… since the beginning of time.  Unless its raining outside or below about 40 degrees, I think you should regularly use one of these too:

But hold on!  Unfortunately for some people, homeowners associations and apartment rules prohibit the use of outdoor clotheslines or other “debris” that some people would find aesthetically unpleasing.  Before you start installing an original solar clothes dryer, review any rules or regulations that may apply to your property, whether through Bylaws, or Covenants, Codes and Restrictions (CCRs), or property rules applicable to rental units.  If you have any questions, you should have a lawyer take a look.  You’re better safe than sorry.

If you are willing to invest a little bit more, but still want to use a solar clothes dryer, check out this video that uses energy from a solar panel to power appliances in a laundry room:

Next to running the dishwasher and having the refrigerator plugged in, I am sure that our clothes dryer is the biggest energy hog at our home.  Especially with four kids and loads of dirty clothes.  I am willing to undertake an experiment using a solar clothes dryer in our backyard…. just as soon as the coldest days of the year have passed.
