Solar Golfing for your next vacation?

Another brilliant solar idea of mine has already been considered.  I thought about the potential invention of solar golfing when driving from Oregon to Washington last week (and then home yesterday).  Granted, winter is not the ideal time for golfing, but I have to write about inspiration when it strikes.  It turns out that solar golfing is already a reality on many courses around the world, through both solar powered golf carts and club houses that have installed solar panels.

Cruise Car, Inc. is a manufacturer of both electric and solar powered golf carts.  And they are not just limited to the golf course.  Golf carts are street legal on any thoroughfare with a speed limit of 30 mph or less.  At less than $4000, it may be a great way to run to the grocery store, or even to work with a short commute, without worrying about the cost of fuel or the environmental impact thereof.

But how can golf courses go even (pardon the pun) greener?  With a solar powered clubhouse, of course.  There are many models to consider, including Snow Mass Clubhouse in Colorado and Wyndansea Oceanside Resort in British Columbia.  In fact, if you are a world traveler, consider www.solargolf.co.uk, which will take you from Thailand to Bangkok in a tour of solar golf facilities.

How about some solar golfing on your next vacation?

Travel to Michigan and you’ll find a solar powered golf clubhouse at Southgate, too.  Of course, I think that any outdoor recreational activity (golf, swimming, tennis, etc.) can and should be solar-powered.  And why not?  If you are recreating outside, then the sun should be shining enough to be providing clean, renewable energy to turn on lights, power automatic ball machines, heat swimming pools, etc.

If you really want golfing to be exercise, you won’t rent a golf cart and will instead use your own, human energy to walk the course.  But it is nice to know that there is a clean alternative for playing the greens.  And also for hitting the 19th hole at the end, if you go to a solar powered clubhouse.

Do you engage in solar golfing?  What are the energy practices of your favorite course?  Perhaps in 2009 you should take a closer look.  Just keep your head down and focused while you are tee-ing off.
