600 solar-powered bus stops to be installed in Miami

I just read about another bright idea to capitalize on the free, abundant energy from the sun.  In sunny Miami, Florida, a media company – Fuel Miami LLC - is working with the city to install 600 solar powered bus stops.  The company is donating the bus shelters, which will integrate solar panels for illumination and outdoor advertising to minimize environmental impact of each stop.  In short, Miami will get free shelters, and Fuel will receive a place to display its customers’ ads without the need for no electrical outlets.

The project will take 3 years to implement, and will also include trash bins and benches, in addition to the bus shelters.

Michael Freedman, CEO of Fuel Outdoor Holdings LLC, Fuel’s parent, said Fuel has donated the bus shelters to ensure clean illumination and security for nighttime passengers, while eliminating potential negative environmental impact.

Miami is well-known for its sun, being located in the “Sunshine State.”  So, it makes perfect sense for a project like this one that can reduce significant amounts of energy usage that many people may not even consider.  Most of the energy will be used simply for lighting and safety.  Only 100 of the 600 solar bus shelters will include advertising.

Over the course of the 20 year contract, each of the 600 solar stops will save 2 tons of CO2 annually.  When you do the math, suddenly, you may start seeing many other ways in which solar energy can be used to reduce unnecessary electricity and waste.
