Samsonite to be Solar Powered

Samsonite to be Solar Powered

There are solar powered backpacks and handbags, even solar panels on clothing.

Now, you can get solar powered Samsonite luggage!  The name that is practically synonymous with suitcases has partnered with Ascent Solar to create travel bags fitted with small, thin film flexible solar panels that can recharge electronics – including computers, mP3 players and cameras on the fly.

Samsonite has been working with Ascent Solar to provide small, flexible solar panels for their new solar charging carrying cases. The new luggage will be lightweight and convenient.  As shown to the left, the “Messenger” carrying bag from Samsonite should be available later this year, and cost approximately $200.

Ascent Solar’s President and CEO, Farhad Moghadam, explains the decision to partner with Samsonite:

“Samsonite is a name that needs no introduction. They are a global leader in luggage and consumer travel products through innovation and customer service.  Our selection by Samsonite gives Ascent Solar a clear path to market with solar integrated consumer products and establishes Ascent as a solar technology solution provider that can meet the needs of consumers demanding a rugged and light-weight portable way to power their electronics. We understand the evolution of the solar industry and how it can better relate to the consumer. With this in mind our goal is to enable and lead a new wave of portable solar charging solutions through Samsonite that will revolutionize the way we power our electronics anywhere and everywhere under the sun.”

For its part, Samsonite believes its foray into the solar powered luggage market is a smart move.  Given the increased reliance of the public on mobile electronics on charging the devices, it only makes sense to use thin-film photovoltaics and similar technologies to provide its customers with good quality, stylish and reliable solar powered travel bags.
