Subway goes solar with its suppliers relying on renewable energy
More and more businesses are seeing the light, so to speak, when it comes to solar power. Instead of relying on grid-based electricity which is usually from coal or gas, Southwest Baking, a supplier of dough to Subway stores in Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, and Southern California announced plans to add a 300 kilowatt (kw) solar energy system at its facility in Tolleson, Arizona.
The solar array will be ground mounted and is estimated to produce about 480,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean solar electricity each year. Subway continues to make efforts to reduce its carbon emissions with this latest announcement. In addition to solar power, the company uses 100% recycled napkins, towel, and tissue products.
Elizabeth Stewart, Subway’s director of corporate social responsibility, commented:
“Being a healthy company is about more than just food; it’s about operating in an environmentally responsible manner.”
