You know what they say about green M&Ms, right? Well, now all of the rainbow of colors produced by the candy giant will have a bit of “green” in them!

Earlier this month, the New Jersey M&Ms candy factory started generating clean solar energy with a new solar array. About 28,000 solar panels at the factory will produce 2 megawatts (MW) of solar electricity – enough to power 1,800 homes.

That translates to 1/5 of the M&M plant’s energy needs!

Its a sound investment for Mars, Inc., which owns M&Ms and provided the land next to the New Jersey facility for the solar panels.

More and more, consumers are looking for environmentally-friendly products. If M&Ms can go greener, that could help it retain its dominance as the premier shelled chocolate treat.

Don’t worry – even though sunshine is now used to make these candies, they will still melt only in your mouth, not in your hands!

Former New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman praised the M&Ms New Jersey solar project as a “blueprint for environmentally friendly business investment.”

What do you think about these greener M&Ms? For me, I’ll take any excuse I can use to treat myself to a bit of candy!
