If you are looking for a way to heat an outdoor, above-ground pool without electricity, then this solar pool heater from Hammacher Schlemmer is for you! More and more people are looking to solar power for their backyard recreation and enjoyment. From solar outdoor lights, to solar lawn mowers, you could significantly slash energy bills and carbon emissions with this ample renewable resource.

This solar pool heater attaches to a regular pump-operated filter system. Water is pumped through 20 feet of coiled black piping in which the water is heated through exposure to sunlight. After traveling through the black piping, the warm water is then pumped back into the pool.

Unlike other solar hot water heaters, the solar pool heater will not warm water to high temperatures. In fact, it simply helps reduce the chill of water used for above ground pools. The pool heating system can increase the temperature of a 6,000 gallon pool by 5 degrees F in 10 days. If you want faster, more dramatic results, up to 4 solar pool heaters can be used at a time to boost water temps by 20 degrees or more.

This Solar Pool Heater comes with all required hardware and accessories to connect it to an above ground pool and its pump-operated filtering system. It also comes with a protective cover to protect the heater while it is in storage over the cooler months.

The solar water heater system costs about $199.

Whether you have an in-ground swimming pool, a spa, hot tub, or an above ground pool, you can use solar power to heat the water to a comfortable temperature, while saving money and the environment.

Solar pool heaters work year-round, no matter where you live – they are not just for sunny locations! Keep your pool at a comfortable 80-degree temperature with clean, soar energy.

Solar Pool Heating works for above-ground pools too

Solar heaters operate with free heat from the sun, with no operating costs. Like other solar hot water systems, water is continuously pumped through a heater, then back into the pool. With an existing pool pump, you can set it to operate during waking hours when you’ll want to use the pool, hot tub or spa.

How much do solar pool heaters cost?

Depending on the size of your pool and warm water needs, you could pay a range of $1000-5000 for a solar heater. Installation costs vary as well – you could even go for a DIY solar option. Average overall cost for a system, plus professional installation is about $5000.

Solar installations are eligible for local, state and federal tax rebates, as well. Be sure to ask about discounts and other incentives!

Where can I get a solar pool heater?

There are many companies that sell both solar heaters and offer professional installation. We are not affiliated with any of these companies.

Compare and contrast bids and be sure to check with the BBB before making an investment in a solar pool heater:

Tap into solar energy to warm your pool, hot tub and spa! Solar hot water will reduce your costs and help you minimize impact on the environment, so you can relax and simply enjoy the water.

Some may say that winter is not the best time to consider pool solar panels, but I respond with the question, “what time like the present?” After all, at least 2-3 months of each year, many of us enjoy spending time in a swimming pool. Some are fortunate enough to have pools in the backyard. Add to that, the weeks of vacation that may take us to locales with swimming pools and its easy to realize that we probably spend more than 1/3 of our lives near a “water hole.” To be honest, I must have pools on my brain, as this is the second swimming post I’ve published in the past few days.

The best things about pool solar panels are: (1) energy savings; and (2) low cost. Some systems cost less than $100, and will save you many more times that in your monthly electric bill. As summarized on the Build it Solar web site:

“Pool systems usually use simple, low cost, unglazed plastic collectors. The pool itself is the thermal storage for the system, and the pump you already use for filtering pool water will also circulate water through the solar collectors.”

You can even go further than pool solar panels – why not use your solar attic fan to heat your pool with energy that would otherwise be released from your home:

With pool solar panels you can both heat and clean your family’s favorite summer hang-out destination. By using the power of the sun instead of grid-based electricity, you’ll reduce your carbon footprint, while dipping your feet in the cool, refreshing waters of a swimming pool.

Pool Solar Panels keep conditions comfortable!

If you don’t want to use a solar attic fan to heat your pool, you can install solar thermal panels instead. These can not only heat your pool, but also other water used in your household. Solar Hot Water saves a tremendous amount of energy each year.

Pool solar panels are a popular topic! Last year, we posted about Swimming Pools Warmed with Hot Water. We’ll do another post on where you can find pool solar panels, and even some directions to make your own, for the do-it-yourselfers!

Jump on in – the water’s fine!
